Past Project

The kanagawa Project

In 2011, I completed a bas-relief sculpture entirely carved from solid maple wood, inspired by the iconic Great Wave off Kanagawa. What began as a commissioned decorative piece intended for the main room of Nobu Malibu evolved into something far more unexpected.

Over the course of seven months, I shaped the work by hand, focusing on depth, movement, and the natural grain of the wood to echo the energy of the wave. The piece measures 6 × 4 feet (183 × 122 cm), giving it a strong presence while preserving intricate detail.

Before it could be installed, the artwork was acquired and ultimately became part of the personal collection of Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, an outcome that added a unique chapter to its story.

This piece remains a defining example of how traditional craftsmanship and cultural inspiration can meet in a contemporary context, carried by both intention and chance.
